Armistice Day

At 11.00hrs on Sunday 8th November 2009 the Membership and their guests stood in silence as once again the Club was temporarily converted into a place of solemn remembrance with more members than in previous years attending the service.

In this year in which the Club celebrated its 90th Anniversary; having been founded from the ashes of the horrors of the Great War to end all wars, along with the end of an era with the sad passing of the last survivors of the that war, it was more poignant than ever that we remembered those that have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.

The Act of Remembrance was conducted by Canon Richard St L Broadberry with tributes and readings being given by Senior Members of the Committee as the congregation paid their respects we remembered those who have been killed or injured in more recent times, particularly the current conflict in Afghanistan; but like those that have gone before them; they also will not be forgotten.

After the service we were joined by members of the Coulsdon Branch of the Royal British Legion along with representatives from the former Whyteleafe Royal British Legion, as well as the Royal Naval Association, who now hold their regular association meetings at the club were warmly welcomed after their own respective commitments at other Remembrance ceremonies.

During the course of the afternoon the two local MPs Richard Ottaway and Tom Brake accompanied by their wives visited the club to pay their respects after their respective Civic duties.

The Club also took this solemn occasion to remember all those Members who passed away during the course of the year and all will be sadly missed.
