90th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

27th JUNE 2009

The Club celebrated its 90th Anniversary on the 27th June 2009 and to mark this auspicious occasion the club celebrated by staging a number of special events which were held in the Club over the weekend of the 27th and 28th June 2009.

 

During the afternoon of Saturday 27th the Club was pleased to welcome Tom Brake MP who represents many of the membership in the House of Commons; during his visit he spent time talking to many of the members.

 

In recognition of the Clubs 90th Anniversary the Club also received a visit by Major General Sir William Cubitt CBE, General Officer Commanding, London District who was accompanied by his ADC.  During the Generals visit he spoke with many members of the Club before addressing those present and congratulating the Club on its 90th Birthday and commending the Club for its continuing support of the Men and Women of the Armed forces of Today as of those of yesteryear.

 

The Evening saw the welcome return of the ABBA Girls Tribute Act; "The Dancing Queens" which like their previous visit was well received by the membership and all those who came had an enjoyable evening

 

The Afternoon of Sunday 28th saw the Club have a number of different activities including a BBQ in the Clubs newly renovated Garden, along with live entertainment from "The Barrow Boys" a typical Cockney style duo.  The Children of the Club as well as some of the adults, indulged in a bit of Face Painting thanks to Fiona's artistic skills.

 

During the afternoon the Club was pleased to have the company of Richard Ottaway MP who was accompanied by his wife who are both frequent visitors to the Club. 

 

The Club was honoured to receive the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Margaret Mead accompanied by her Consort, Councillor Dudley Mead.  The Mayor toured the facilities of the Club, including the newly refurbished garden and children’s play area and spoke at length with many of the membership, before giving a speech in recognition of the 90th Anniversary of the Club.
